Drought or wet cold winter

Too Much Saturation

Cypress trees are affected in a negative way by feeder roots. Further research has revealed that the feeder root could be blocked by a fungal organism that makes it impossible for the tree to use nutrients or water up the canopy. Cankers can develop at the base of shoots and main vascular branches.

Seiridium Unicorn Pathogen, or Seiridium Canker, is a secondary disease. The fungal pathogen can now be transmitted by air. This will most likely spread the disease to nearby cypress trees. Additionally, the disease can be caused by drought.

Seiridium Canker: Selecting the right Cypress Tree

A protocol will be established depending on the severity. Removing trees with more brown than 30% is a good idea. This will prevent the spread of the disease to other Cypress trees.

Also, for cypress tree tops that are damaged by tree disease. It’s best for them to be removed. If your cypress tree is in serious decline and has a diameter less than 4 inches, it’s best to get them removed. The treatment may not work for you. The treatments work well for cypress trees with a greater than 4 caliper inch.

Seiridium Canker: Treatment

  • Remove brown branches, and then bring them back to their main stem.
  • All clippings and leaves that are still on the ground near the tree’s base should be removed.
  • Be sure to disinfect your equipment between each cut.
  • First spray of fungicide on the foliage. You will need to apply a second time in most cases later in the season.
  • Microinjections with a different pesticide to the canopy go in the vascular systems.

If the tree still has signs of new browning, repeat the entire process. It is important to remember that trees cannot heal themselves in the same environment they were in when they got sick.

To ensure success with treatment, it is essential to identify the cause of the Seiridium Canker disease. If drought was the root reason, it is important to put the tree on a water pump. You should reduce watering if you notice a decline in the tree’s health due to too much saturation.
